Mikes Links Monday 8/11/08

Published by mikedopp at 1:17 AM under Web Fun | Twitter | Interesting | Mikes link monday! | Addictions

Addictions have been the topic of the week.  My wife and a friend of mine (Blake) Got me addicted to Sonic Slushes. The black berry flavor you don’t see on the menu. Yeah that good.

My wife along with every woman in the United States have found an addiction to “Twilight”. I think my wife was a late comer to the whole thing which means she has made up for it by reading 3 of the 4 books in 4 days. microsoft-surface-order

Rest in Peace: Bernie Mac. Isaac Hayes. Dang it was a death weekend.

Yes the Olympics started and I was stoked about it (Microsoft and NBC announced this awesome silverlight web site (This was at MIX08) for live streaming of video (real time. guess that’s what live means.) However NBC lied and they delivered a crappy overweight with special “games” as well as dead links to crap I don’t care about. To be fair there is some good info about the athletes and back story to them. I just was hoping that I could watch it streaming and well all that was promised. Guess I should not have expected more than mediocre (look for links in my list for real streaming).InvestorMind

New guy (bryan) sized my sites up this past week and was amazed that my blog was actually cool. Also thanks to him he made me realize that my PR or Page Rank is now 4. So I must say thanks and well woot. However he was disappointed when I didn’t capitalize (google ads) my site more. mmm…

Also blog.mikedopp.com will be experiencing some issues. I have to down it again and clean up some bad code. Sorry. I know you will miss my links for a few minutes.

Crap almost forgot. Twitter  let me start following again on Wednesday. Thanks to all those who stuck with me and continue to listen to my rants. I try to make them slightly enjoyable.

So on to the long awaited and much loved Links:2008-08-01-tagcloud

Program File Editor Oldie but goodie

I was once a young programmer (ok script kiddie; however those days are over. At least the man thinks so.) I loved writing macro’s, vbscript and jscripts to mostly mess with my friends making their cdrom drives open and close and floppy drives try to read. All good times. PFE

When I started at my first true getting paid to write complex batch, command files, inf scripts as well as long html/xhtml/xml scripting. I was using notepad and had many syntax errors due to lack of syntax outlining like a great IDE that I couldn’t afford. That is when my boss pointed me to a great little application call Program File Editor. I was amazed by the ability of this robust little application.

My favorite part was the little record button that would make what ever I did like line spacing as well as parsing long xml strings easy and very efficient.

Created by Alan Phillips at Lancaster University. Also has not been updated since 1999. As you can see it still works in Vista.

PFEAboutIf you need a great little application to write complex macro’s or a great little text editor give Program File Editor a try.

Twitter Madness or Please twitter let me follow someone

Published by mikedopp at 11:10 PM under Web Fun | Twitter | Interesting | Addictions

I consider myself one of the faithful over at Twitter. Constantly updating my feed or tweet if you will. I follow alot of people just to see what they say on a daily basis.

Especially those within the my geographic area as well as the multiple professionals within the field of work I do which is writing web based applications as well as creating magnificent (I know magnificent a great word) web sites. I could give you a list however that is beyond the scope of this article.TwitterFollowingLimits

Well since last Monday I have been unable to follow anyone else. Yes I follow around 2000+ twitterpated twitti (twitters for short). I get a steady stream of people following me and I like to reciprocate that by following them as long as the twitter is not a bot, spammer or evil in which I can’t explain.

Going back to what happened on that unfortunate July morning twitter updated their algorithm to get rid of extra bot's and such which I applaud. However the rules killed my ability to follow anyone else. I gave the excuse to my followers or those new to the mikedopp feed that somehow twitter felt I was a bot or other evil doer. Of course that was in humor. I gave twitter until that Thursday to clean up issues from the update and still did not see an improvement.

I went ahead and complained at the Getsatisfaction web site (forums) as well as entered two help tickets. I have yet to get an email, tweet or kiss my butt from twitter. Is twitter too big for the twitter faithful?

So my biggest gripe is that others have 10k+ followers and are able to follow more. Scoble for example?

Please don’t get me wrong I like the idea of keeping too many twitter bot’s and evil doers from signing up and spamming twitter. Using the following limits.

Please Twitter reconsider.

Guess plurk.com or indenti.ca will play nice.

Live Messenger Hidden Add-ons Fix

Published by mikedopp at 9:48 AM under Web Fun | Interesting | Hacks

So here is step-by-step tutorial to enable it:
images
1.
Open regedit and goto:

“HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MSNMessenger”

2. In right-side pane, create a new DWORD value and give it name "AddInFeatureEnabled" and set its value to 1
3. That’s it. Now open Windows Live Messenger and goto "Tools -> Options" and you'll see a new tab "Add-ins" at last.

4. Remember to restart Windows Live Messenger for the buttons to be enabled.
