Program File Editor Oldie but goodie

I was once a young programmer (ok script kiddie; however those days are over. At least the man thinks so.) I loved writing macro’s, vbscript and jscripts to mostly mess with my friends making their cdrom drives open and close and floppy drives try to read. All good times. PFE

When I started at my first true getting paid to write complex batch, command files, inf scripts as well as long html/xhtml/xml scripting. I was using notepad and had many syntax errors due to lack of syntax outlining like a great IDE that I couldn’t afford. That is when my boss pointed me to a great little application call Program File Editor. I was amazed by the ability of this robust little application.

My favorite part was the little record button that would make what ever I did like line spacing as well as parsing long xml strings easy and very efficient.

Created by Alan Phillips at Lancaster University. Also has not been updated since 1999. As you can see it still works in Vista.

PFEAboutIf you need a great little application to write complex macro’s or a great little text editor give Program File Editor a try.

Mikes Retro Software of the week 3/2/08

It has been way too long. At least a month since I have posted a software of the week. So here is my pick for this week.

Ever need to mount a Linux formatted Hard drive in windows? To collect data hack your tivo/dvr?

This little app will allow windows to read and write EXT2 and 3 Partitions as well as fully formatted Hard drives.ScreenIfsDrives

Ext2 IFS Download

Best of all its free! This helps me when I need critical data off of my NAS (Linux OS based) that has crashed or is in need of repair.

It provides Windows NT4.0/2000/XP/2003/Vista with full access to Linux Ext2 volumes (read access and write access). This may be useful if you have installed both Windows and Linux as a dual boot environment on your computer.

The "Ext2 Installable File System for Windows" software is freeware.

It installs a pure kernel mode file system driver Ext2fs.sys, which actually extends the Windows NT/2000/XP/2003/Vista operating system to include the Ext2 file system. Since it is executed on the same software layer at the Windows NT operating system core like all of the native file system drivers of Windows (for instance NTFS, FASTFAT, or CDFS for Joliet/ISO CD-ROMs), all applications can access directly to Ext2 volumes. Ext2 volumes get drive letters (for instance O:). Files, and directories of an Ext2 volume appear in file dialogs of all applications. There is no need to copy files from or to Ext2 volumes in order to work with them.

Mikes Retro Software of the week 2/21/08

Ever need a minute away from the craziness of school, home or even work?  However you can’t leave your office due to way to much on your plate? Well here is two ways of getting that stress out and making your Windows desktop take the punishment.

Desktop Games and Chicken destroy.

Basically when you launch this software it takes a screen shot of your current desktop and allows you to put various tools of destruction on or act upon your Desktop(screen shot).

Works in all versions of windows as far as I can test.

Mikes Retro Software of the Week 2/13/08

Little known(unless your a XP expert) Applications from Microsoft that really never went anywhere.

Like the "shplayer" that is or was supposed to be the Shell media player for XP however rumor has it being axed on or before RTM.

On a different note another outsourced XP(media player 9)powertoy  for having a video screen saver was very cool until Microsoft released Media player 10 and 11 and the app broke. Since the original writer (AnalogX) of the app has not been heard from for a while no more updates were performed sadly(IMHO). So I present two applications that are retro to the point of not working on or with Windows Vista or Windows XP sp2. Enjoy!

**No Screen shots available. Sorry!**

Mikes Retro Software of the week 2/6/08

So long ago and many many times infinity(2nd grade reference there). I downloaded the Internet. Any cool app I found. Some I wish I had kept. I then found myself in a Dupelocator splashpickle when the downloaded software had been updated or duplicated in another folder so I had multiple copies of different versions (good or bad) and no way to keep track of any of them. So I found Dupelocater.exe. Dupelocater interface

Drag folders from Windows Explorer into the DupeLocater.exe window and press Search.

When finished, drag the report duplicates to whatever folder you wish, or the Recycle Bin, or a viewer.

NOTE: DupeLocater.exe does NOT care about file names. Files with identical content are considered duplicates.

Also DupLocater does not seem to like Windows Vista. Go figure.
