Program File Editor Oldie but goodie

I was once a young programmer (ok script kiddie; however those days are over. At least the man thinks so.) I loved writing macro’s, vbscript and jscripts to mostly mess with my friends making their cdrom drives open and close and floppy drives try to read. All good times. PFE

When I started at my first true getting paid to write complex batch, command files, inf scripts as well as long html/xhtml/xml scripting. I was using notepad and had many syntax errors due to lack of syntax outlining like a great IDE that I couldn’t afford. That is when my boss pointed me to a great little application call Program File Editor. I was amazed by the ability of this robust little application.

My favorite part was the little record button that would make what ever I did like line spacing as well as parsing long xml strings easy and very efficient.

Created by Alan Phillips at Lancaster University. Also has not been updated since 1999. As you can see it still works in Vista.

PFEAboutIf you need a great little application to write complex macro’s or a great little text editor give Program File Editor a try.

As you all know or now know I am a System Administrator at night. So I had to go through some serious tests to get these. Really! The Certifications are also known as “poke in the eye” or “put out the lights” on the Server,Workstation,Desktop or even Laptop. To get these Certifications you need to learn simple things like 2360622554_9892975eaa_mwindows key –> U – S for shutdown or –R for Restart. This works on all Microsoft OS’s except for Vista and Server 2008. I am awaiting the special training on those.

Mikes Links Monday 5/19/08

Published by mikedopp at 12:07 AM under Interesting | Mikes link monday! | Windows 9x-Vista

Ah last full week of work before vacation. So. Cal here I come.phd050508s Of course over time was just approved meaning I will be up late for the next few days writing monster code to fit all the new "bits" in. I will post the prototype sometime after Tuesday.

On another note I was in the server room at my second job on Saturday night doing some serious Unix hacking to get a Solaris 9 cluster back up after a hiccup.29lnvd0 The next morning I had a Windows 2003 Web cluster (load balancing) just up and die. It has been a busy weekend. thumbdugger

So here is my question for the week:

Everyone says that windows is less stable than Unix(Linux) servers. My opinion is if the server is not configured right what is the difference? I have had very tested and configured windows servers not die for years and Unix boxes crash on a dime. This could become a very heated and deep question. My personal opinion given two boxes(Servers) with the exact same hardware(burned in for a week) with Windows 2003 and Unix(pick a flavor). If the server was configured correctly how long would they last?skgi_2134587_17985

Windows GUI Based MD5 Checker

Ever need a quick and dirty way to check the MD5 Hash on any compressed folder or executable?

At Work: Joe and I have had the occasional corrupt file from Microsoft and had to pull out of installing patches and such. This was a problem and a time waster. So in every deployment of any project we decided to be sticklers on checking the hashes. While yes there is a few utilities on the interweb or ExtraNet (both very bad slang for Internet) I have settled for the non installing executable to do my Hash Checking.

Some have even commented: "If your such a great developer why don't you write your own?" I suppose I could however I have little time to rewrite the wheel.

WinMD5Free

Have a look and enjoy.
